Well... A few days later, I found and read about another person's experience with this issue. They had collected their car after a service, and thought that the CD's had been removed, and tried putting a new one in, at which point, the CD player suddenly woke up and realised it did contain CDs inside.
I was going to try this out, but when I went to start the car, I suddenly realised it was playing track 1 from disc 1. It had miraculously cured itself! I am so thankful that I did not have to take it to a dealership to get it looked at. Can you imagine them removing the unit and then having a squeaky dash forever? :-)
